Thinking about ending an early pregnancy? You may be wondering: Will it hurt? How much bleeding is normal? Can I do it at home? How will I know it worked?
The abortion pill, also called medication abortion, is a safe, non-surgical option for ending an early pregnancy. It uses two FDA-approved medications and is available at Garden State Gynecology for eligible patients within the first 11 weeks, 6 days, or 83 days, of pregnancy.
Here’s what to expect, step by step.
What Is the Abortion Pill?
“The abortion pill” is actually two medicines taken in order:
- Mifepristone comes first. It blocks the hormone a pregnancy needs to continue.
- Misoprostol comes next, usually 24 to 48 hours later. It causes cramping and bleeding so the uterus can empty.
Together, these medications work much like an early miscarriage.
How Far Along Can I Be?
At Garden State Gynecology, the abortion pill is available for eligible patients within the first 11 weeks, 6 days of pregnancy, also written as 11.6 weeks or 83 days.
Before you start, we’ll confirm how far along you are and make sure the pregnancy is not ectopic, meaning outside the uterus. Medication abortion does not treat an ectopic pregnancy, so this step is important.
Not sure how far along you are? Call us. You may still have options, including procedural abortion if medication abortion is not the best fit.
What Happens During the Process?
For most patients, the process is straightforward:
- You take mifepristone. Many people feel normal afterward and go about their day.
- You take misoprostol 24 to 48 hours later. Cramping and bleeding usually start within a few hours.
- You follow up with us about two weeks later. This helps us confirm that everything is complete and your recovery is on track.
You’ll leave with clear instructions, pain-relief guidance, and a number to call if questions come up.
What Will It Feel Like?
After misoprostol, expect cramping and bleeding heavier than a normal period. Passing clots is common. The heaviest bleeding usually happens in the first several hours, then gets lighter.
Spotting can continue for one to two weeks.
You may also have:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Chills or a low fever
- Tiredness
- Headache
These side effects usually pass within a day. Ibuprofen, a heating pad, comfortable clothes, and having someone you trust nearby can help.
Choose a private, comfortable place with easy bathroom access.
When Should I Call?
Serious problems are rare, but call us right away if you have:
- Bleeding that soaks two full-size pads per hour for two hours in a row
- Fever of 100.4°F or higher lasting more than 24 hours after misoprostol
- Severe pain that medication does not help
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- Feeling faint, dizzy, or very weak
- No bleeding within 24 hours after taking misoprostol
Our telephone counselors are available 7 AM to 10 PM daily. If something does not feel right, call.
How Effective Is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill is highly effective, with a success rate over 97%.
About 95% to 97% of patients do not need any additional procedure. In a small number of cases, about 3% to 5%, a brief follow-up procedure may be needed to safely complete the process.
That is one reason your follow-up visit matters.
Is the Abortion Pill Safe?
Yes. Medication abortion has a strong safety record, and serious complications are uncommon.
It also does not affect your future fertility. You can get pregnant again quickly after an abortion — ovulation can return as soon as two weeks later, even before your next period.
If you want birth control, we can help you choose a birth control option that fits your body, your schedule, and your future plans.
Is My Visit Confidential?
Yes. Your privacy matters.
Garden State Gynecology provides care in a discreet, welcoming environment with professionally trained staff. If you have questions about privacy, insurance, billing, or transportation, call us. We’ll walk you through your options.
