Deciding to have an abortion is your decision, and it’s a normal part of healthcare. At Garden State Gynecology, you’ll get safe, confidential, judgment-free care — with real anesthesia options (yes, you can be completely asleep) — at our offices in Morristown and Princeton, NJ. We also wel come patients traveling from out of state. Most major insurance and New Jersey Medicaid are accepted, and free or low-cost care may be available if you qualify.
Your abortion options: the pill or an in-clinic procedure
The abortion pill (medication abortion) is available up to 11.6 weeks (83 days). It uses two FDA-approved medications (mifepristone and misoprostol), is over 97% effective, and comes with medical guidance the whol e way. Before you start, we confirm how far along you are and rule out ectopic pregnancy. Most people are back to normal activities within a day or two, and it doesn’t affect your future fertility.
In–clinic (procedural) abortion is available through 17.6 weeks:
- Gentle Touch® Manual Vacuum Aspiration (up to 9 weeks) — about five minutes, no machine suction, no scraping, and usually less cramping and bleeding afterward. It’s a specialized option most facilities don’t offer.
- Dilation and Curettage (D&C) — through 6 weeks.
Not sure how far along you are? Use the pregnancy calculator on our website or call — every visit includes a sonogram and quick blood and urine testing to confirm dating first.
You don't have to be awake: anesthesia and sedation options
The question we hear most: willit hurt, and willI be awake? You choose your comfort level:
- Full anesthesia — completely asleep, start to finish. We’re one of very few NJ providers offering in-house, accredited anesthesia designed to provide a comfortable, pain-free experience.
- Deep sedation (“asleep“) — a deeper, sleepy state.
- Conscious sedation (“twilight“) — relaxed and drowsy.
- Local anesthetic — fully awake, with just the surgical area numbed.
All anesthesia and sedation is given by a board–certified anesthesiologist, and we’re Quad A accredited for general anesthesia, deep sedation, and conscious sedation. Your procedure is performed by a board–certified or board–eligible OB/GYN — and we won’t begin until you feel ready.
If you choose anesthesia or sedation: don’t eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your appointment time (unless your care team says otherwise) , and bring a support person to escort you home — it’s required. Afterward, you’ll rest in our recovery area under nurse monitoring, and most patients return for a quick follow-up about two weeks later.
What does an abortion cost in NJ?
We offer among the lowest self-pay fees in NJ and NY, and procedure fees are all–inclusive for preliminary testing and counseling — no surprise charges for the sonogram, counseling, or in-house testing. Outside laboratory services, if needed, may be separate.
Free and low–cost abortion care may be available through several grant and funding programs if you qualify. When you call, we can review your options, apply to funding organizations on your behalf, or set up in-house, income-based sl iding-scale assistance. Ask what’s covered — procedure, anesthesia, ultrasound, labs, follow-up — and what your total out-of-pocket cost would be.
We accept most major New Jersey insurance carriers, and New Jersey Medicaid (NJ FamilyCare) covers abortion care — which isn’t true in many states. Our team can help verify your coverage before your visit
Your privacy and your rights in New Jersey
- You can consent to your own care. New Jersey requires no parental consent or notification — see the NJ Department of Health’s Know Your Rights page.
- No forced waiting period, so you can often be seen quickly.
- Your records are protected. NJ law bars providers from sharing reproductive-health information without your consent and shields patients and providers from out-of-state investigations.
One honest caveat: if you’re on a parent‘s or partner‘s insurance plan, an Explanation of Benefits can be mailed to the policyholder. If full privacy matters to you, paying out of pocket is the most private option — ask about self-pay rates and in-house assistance.
Every visit is confidential and judgment-free. Our team includes female and male board-certified OB/GYNs, our practice is LGBTQ+ friendly, and Spanish-speaking support is available.
Coming from out of state?
If you’re traveling from a state with abortion restrictions or a ban, you’re wel come here, and you’re not alone. New Jersey’s shield law helps protect patients traveling for care, and our staff can help coordinate travel, accommodations, and funding that may cover both your care and your trip. Garden State Gynecology also l ists Staten Island, NY services — call the main number to confirm current availability and location details.
