For many people, a gynecology visit isn’t just a routine appointment. Past trauma, physical discomfort, or fear can make even a simple Pap smear feel overwhelming, and those feelings are often the reason people delay care they need. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to push through it.

At Garden State Gynecology, anesthesia is available for all gynecologic services, if requested, so you can get the care you need comfortably and without pain.

Why Some Patients Choose Anesthesia

Every patient’s reasons are personal, and you never need to explain yours to request anesthesia. Many of our patients choose it for one of these reasons:

  • Prior trauma. For survivors of sexual trauma, or anyone who has had a painful or upsetting exam in the past, a pelvic exam or procedure can bring back difficult memories. Anesthesia can make it possible to get care without reliving that experience.
  • Physical discomfort. Conditions such as pelvic pain, vaginismus, or a sensitive cervix can make exams and procedures genuinely painful. Anesthesia removes that pain from the equation.
  • Fear or anxiety. Medical anxiety is common, and worrying about pain can build for weeks before a visit. Knowing you’ll be comfortable can make it far easier to book the appointment in the first place.

Whatever brings you to us, our team will listen, explain each step before it happens, and respect your choices. All of our support staff are women, and female physicians are available if that helps you feel more at ease.

Which GYN Services Can Be Done with Anesthesia?

Garden State Gynecology offers anesthesia, if requested, for a wide range of gynecology services, including:

  • Annual exams and Pap smears
  • IUD insertion and removal
  • LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)
  • Endometrial Biopsy

Other gynecologic services may also be available. Ask our team which options fit your visit.

IUD insertion and/or removal are two of the most common reasons patients ask about anesthesia. IUDs offer highly effective, long-lasting birth control, and we carry both hormonal and copper options. With anesthesia, insertion and removal can be comfortable and pain-free.

If you’ve had an abnormal Pap result, a colposcopy lets your provider take a closer look at the cervix. When treatment is needed, a LEEP removes abnormal cells in about 10 to 20 minutes, and with anesthesia, the entire procedure is pain-free.

Your Anesthesia Options, and Why Safety Comes First

You can choose the level of comfort that’s right for you: full anesthesia, twilight sedation, or a local anesthetic while you stay awake. Your provider will talk through the options with you before your visit.

Garden State Gynecology is Quad A accredited for general anesthesia, deep sedation, and conscious sedation. Anesthesia care involves two dedicated physicians, your gynecologist and an anesthesiologist, working together rather than one provider managing both roles. Our team includes board-certified or board-eligible OB/GYNs and anesthesiologists, all-female support staff, and female physicians are available.

Preparing for Your Visit and Recovering Afterward

If you choose anesthesia or sedation, a little preparation keeps your visit safe and smooth:

  • Don’t eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your appointment
  • Bring a support person to take you home after your visit
  • Bring a list of your current medications and allergies
  • Wear comfortable clothing

After your visit, you’ll rest in our recovery area until you’re ready to go home. Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day, and avoid driving or making important decisions until the next day. Most patients return to regular activities soon after, depending on the procedure. For example, if a biopsy is taken during a colposcopy, avoid sex and tampons for about a week.

Don’t Let Pain Keep You From Care

Routine gynecology care is one of the best ways to protect your long-term health, and trauma, discomfort, or fear shouldn’t stand in the way. Whether you need an annual exam, a new IUD, or follow-up after an abnormal Pap test, our team will help you feel safe and comfortable from start to finish.
